Congratulations to Michelle and thanks to all who entered. www.michelledumond.com “Bob Dylan would love her. Rufus Wainwright would drag her onstage with him. Leonard Cohen and Shakira would team up to adopt her. She has the musical skills to establish credibility with a more artsy crowd and the earthiness and humor to make her more accessible to people like me who just love music.” Jennifer Layton, Indie-Music.com 1:30 pm – INFLUENTS (Promenade Stage) Hi watt hip hop with DJ C-LO and Emcees Estea-El, Abyss, Sauce (SOS) and Umi Hymn Hymn and break dancers the Floorfilluhs. Tired of the rampant materialism and ignorant tales of gun play ruling the mainstream of hip hop, Influents is stepping in to the game to remind people that hip hop is also traditionally used as a means for upliftment, education and good times over a funky groove. 2:30 pm – POWER OF SONG SEMINAR – (Alice Mackay Room – lower floor) We all know music has played a powerful role in shaping positive changes in the world; peace songs, protest songs, songs that reach the heart and inform the mind. Spend an hour with Buffy Sainte-Marie, Jim Byrnes, Kinnie Starr and Sandy Scofield and discuss the transformative power of song - from the personal to the global. 4:00 pm - BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE: A MULTIMEDIA LIFE. Screening of new documentary (Alice Mackay Room – lower floor) Buffy's enduring career gives us the opportunity to follow her vibrant life today and mixes current performance footage, with archival ones, including a 1964 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival and the induction of her song Universal Soldier into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. The documentary shows Buffy's emergence on the scene as a shy young singer and follows her as she progresses as a talented songwriter and effective spokesperson for Native rights whose strong political stance and growing popularity resulted in the banning of her music on American airwaves. Interviews with family, friends and her music contemporaries include Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson, Bill Cosby, Taj Mahal, Steppenwolf's John Kay, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Sylvia Tyson and Eric Andersen. On the Promenade find Circus Fungus, Science World On The Road, community displays and the exhibit of the Virtual POWER QUILT - artistic renderings and photographs by British Columbians that represent the power and majesty of our most precious resources, all woven into a slide show. For almost a century, water in British Columbia has been synonymous with power and the energy that fuels our lives and our livelihoods. My Generation is a festival that celebrates the role and importance of our water, and the power and jobs it produces. It is a venue for British Columbians to express, through music and art, how they feel about public power and BC’s natural resources. The Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE 378) is proud to sponsor My Generation. Music and art are powerful forces in our lives and provide us with a unique opportunity to celebrate the things that matter the most. For more information go to: www.publicpowerbc.ca
